Heavy Vehicles Banned on Malé Roads This Saturday for Elections

By Hussain Shinan Published 7 hours ago

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced a temporary ban on the operation of heavy vehicles on the streets of Malé this Saturday, as the country prepares for the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.

The restriction has been introduced to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the election period, when increased movement of voters is expected across the capital.

According to the ministry, the ban will apply to several categories of vehicles commonly used for transporting heavy goods and machinery. These include vehicles classified under A, B, C0, C2, D, E, and V categories.

The restriction will be enforced from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on election day. During this period, vehicles falling under the specified categories will not be allowed to operate on Malé roads unless they have obtained special permits from relevant authorities.

Officials said the measure is aimed at reducing congestion and ensuring easier access for the public to polling stations throughout the day.

The ministry also warned that legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply with the directive, in accordance with the Land Transport Act.

Authorities have urged vehicle operators and the general public to cooperate with the temporary restrictions to help ensure a safe and orderly election process.
