Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has begun preparations to introduce an international-standard duty-free retail operation at the new terminal of Gan International Airport in Addu City, in a move aimed at transforming passenger experience and strengthening the southern region’s role in global travel.
The initiative signals a strategic expansion of premium airport services beyond the Greater Malé region, aligning with national priorities to decentralize tourism growth, enhance regional connectivity, and stimulate economic activity across outer atolls.

According to MACL, the planned duty-free operation will adhere to globally recognized retail standards, positioning Gan International Airport as a competitive gateway for international travel in the south. The development is expected to support increased tourist arrivals and facilitate the expansion of international flight routes to Addu City.
Officials highlighted that the project will also generate significant employment opportunities, particularly for Maldivian youth, as the airport scales up operations in line with rising demand. As part of the rollout, selected staff will undergo specialized training with internationally recognized retail brands to ensure service delivery meets international benchmarks.
The move forms part of broader government efforts to elevate Addu City into a key node within the global aviation network. By strengthening infrastructure and enhancing service offerings, authorities aim to unlock the region’s tourism potential while ensuring sustainable, future-focused growth in the aviation sector.
Industry observers note that expanding duty-free operations to regional airports could diversify revenue streams and reduce reliance on Malé-centric travel, supporting a more balanced national tourism model.
