Sweltering conditions gripped parts of the Maldives today, with the capital recording a “feels like” temperature of 37.3°C, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service.
Data released at 11:00 a.m. showed that heat index values across several regions were exceeding 35°C, with Malé registering the highest level among monitored locations.
Other recorded “feels like” temperatures included:
- Hdh. Hanimaadhoo: 36.4°C
- L. Kadhdhoo: 36.4°C
- Gdh. Kaadedhdhoo: 35.9°C
- Addu City: 35.6°C
The intense heat coincides with election day, as voters across the country queue at polling stations to cast ballots in the Local Council Elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and a national referendum.
Despite the high temperatures, turnout remained steady throughout the morning, with many voters spending extended periods outdoors during peak heat hours.
Health Advisory Issued
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions against dehydration and heat-related illnesses, particularly as temperatures are expected to remain high through the afternoon.
Recommended safety measures include:
- Staying hydrated by drinking water regularly
- Avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
- Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and using hats or umbrellas
- Taking extra care for children, elderly individuals, and outdoor workers
Officials also encouraged voters waiting in queues to carry water and seek shade whenever possible.
With polling scheduled to continue until 4:00 p.m., the peak heat period is expected to overlap with the final hours of voting, prompting renewed calls for caution.
