President Mohamed Muizzu has called on citizens across the Maldives to take part in today’s elections, stressing that voting is both a fundamental right and a civic responsibility.
The President made the appeal after casting his ballot at Taajuddeen School, where voting is underway for the Local Council Elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and a national referendum.
Speaking to journalists at the polling station, he encouraged all eligible voters to participate, noting the importance of public involvement in the democratic process.
“Voting is a fundamental legal right for every citizen. I call upon the people to participate and fulfil this responsibility,” he said.
Thousands Contesting Across the Country
Polling, which began earlier in the day, is scheduled to continue until 4:00 p.m., with thousands of candidates contesting seats across councils and WDCs nationwide.
According to the Elections Commission, a total of 2,961 candidates are taking part in the elections.
The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has fielded the largest number of candidates, with 1,322 contestants, followed by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) with 905 candidates.
Other parties participating include:
- Maldives Development Alliance (MDA): 57 candidates
- Jumhooree Party (JP): 15 candidates
- Adhaalath Party (AP): 9 candidates
- The Democrats: 8 candidates
In addition, 645 independent candidates are also contesting.
Council and WDC Races
Breaking down the figures further, 1,593 candidates are contesting for Local Council seats, while 1,368 candidates are vying for positions in Women’s Development Committees across the country.
As voting continues, authorities have reiterated calls for public participation, with the President’s appeal adding to broader efforts to encourage turnout in what is one of the most significant election days in the Maldivian political calendar.
