The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that the official results of the nationwide elections held on April 4 will be released tomorrow.
The polls marked one of the most extensive electoral exercises in the Maldives, with voters participating in three separate ballots on the same day: the Local Council Elections, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Elections, and a national referendum on whether Presidential and Parliamentary elections should be held simultaneously in the future.
Recounts Underway Before Final Declaration
While preliminary results have already been published on the EC’s website, officials said a small number of ballot boxes remain under review due to formal complaints. These boxes are currently being recounted, with final tallies expected to be included in the official results.
The Commission confirmed that the complete and certified results will be announced during a press conference scheduled for tomorrow.
Record Turnout Reported
According to the EC, the election recorded the highest voter participation ever seen in a council election. Out of 294,876 eligible voters, approximately 73 percent cast their ballots.
Swearing-In Set for Next Month
Preparations are already underway for the swearing-in of newly elected representatives. The Local Government Authority (LGA) is organising the ceremonies, which are scheduled to take place on the 17th of next month.
The event will include both the oath-taking of council members and the formal declaration process for WDC members, with a joint ceremony planned.
Seats Contested Nationwide
In the elections, voters selected representatives for 626 Island Council seats and 52 City Council positions, shaping local governance across the country for the coming term.
