President Appoints Mohamed Hussain Shareef as Chief Government Spokesperson

By Hussain Shinan Published April 15, 2026

President Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Hussain Shareef as Chief Government Spokesperson at the President’s Office, granting him ministerial rank.

The appointment places a seasoned public servant at the forefront of government communications, as the administration moves to strengthen engagement with the public and enhance its strategic messaging.

Extensive Experience in Public Service

Mohamed Hussain Shareef brings with him a long record in both governance and diplomacy. He previously served as a member of the People’s Majlis and has represented the Maldives in several ambassadorial roles across different countries.

Most recently, he held the position of Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, where he played a key role in advancing bilateral relations.

Return to a Familiar Role

This is not Shareef’s first stint in a communications leadership role at the President’s Office. He previously served as Chief Government Spokesman from 2005 to 2007, followed by a term as Presidential Spokesperson from 2007 to 2008.

He was also instrumental in the early establishment of the Strategic Communications Unit at the President’s Office, contributing to the development of the government’s modern communications framework.

Focus on Strategic Communication

Officials say the appointment reflects the administration’s emphasis on strengthening public communication and ensuring clearer dissemination of government policies and decisions.

With his experience spanning both domestic governance and international diplomacy, Shareef is expected to play a central role in shaping the government’s communication strategy moving forward.
