President Mohamed Muizzu has established a new unit within the President’s Office, titled the “Maldives Territorial Office,” aimed at managing and overseeing matters related to the country’s territorial boundaries.
The office, formed on Sunday, is intended to operate as a specialized body responsible for defining the Maldives’ geographical limits and addressing issues linked to national territory. The decision to create the office was first announced during the President’s address to the People’s Majlis on February 5.
According to the President’s Office, the newly formed unit will play a key role in coordinating efforts with both local institutions and international bodies to resolve any disputes arising from boundary demarcations.
Among its primary responsibilities will be determining the official coordinates of the Maldives’ baselines and territorial limits, as well as maintaining and providing information related to boundary maps and relevant legal documentation.
The office is also expected to support the government in strengthening the country’s position on territorial matters, particularly in areas requiring technical and legal expertise.
Officials said administrative preparations are currently underway, including recruitment of staff, before the office becomes fully operational.
The establishment of the Maldives Territorial Office marks a step toward consolidating the country’s approach to territorial governance and ensuring long-term management of boundary-related issues.
