President Muizzu warns opposition against “disruptive conduct” after election losses

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has accused elements within the opposition of engaging in disruptive conduct following their losses in key local council elections, urging political actors to demonstrate responsibility and respect for public expectations.

Addressing supporters after the ruling People’s National Congress secured victories in traditional opposition strongholds such as Rasdhoo, Ukulhas, and Thoddoo, President Muizzu said some newly elected opposition figures had already begun “creating unrest” and using inappropriate rhetoric.

He stressed that such behaviour does not reflect the mandate given by voters, who expect discipline and constructive governance from elected representatives.

Despite the criticism, the President reaffirmed that his administration would cooperate with all councils regardless of political affiliation, pledging equitable development across the country.

President Muizzu also signalled a more transparent approach to governance, stating he would publicly address instances where councils or institutions obstruct service delivery.

The remarks come amid shifting political dynamics following the local elections, which saw the ruling party expand its influence while the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party retained ground in major urban centres.
