Nazim sidelined: Has the deputy speaker lost trust within ruling ranks?

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

The ruling establishment has moved decisively to strengthen parliamentary oversight, removing Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim from two of the People’s Majlis’ most critical committees in what insiders describe as a necessary corrective step to uphold institutional integrity.

Official updates published on the Majlis website confirm that Nazim has been taken off the powerful Committee on National Security Services, known as the 241 Committee, and the Public Accounts Committee. He has been reassigned to the Environment and Climate Change Committee, marking a significant downgrade from roles central to national security and financial accountability.

The changes follow standard procedure initiated by the ruling party’s Parliamentary Group, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring that only the most capable and trusted members oversee sensitive national matters. Observers aligned with the government view the move as a firm signal that underperformance or controversy will not be tolerated within high-stakes committees.

Questions have also been raised over Nazim’s handling of the transition. Despite presiding over recent sittings in the absence of the Speaker, he did not announce his own reassignment, a departure from established parliamentary practice that has drawn quiet criticism within political circles.

Nazim continues to serve on the State-Owned Enterprises Committee, though his removal from the two most influential oversight bodies underscores a clear loss of confidence.

In contrast, Ahmed Zameer, MP for Machangolhi Medhu, has been appointed to the 241 Committee, while Hamad Abdulla of Fuvahmulah North now takes a seat on the Public Accounts Committee. Both appointments are seen as part of a broader effort to reinforce accountability and efficiency within Parliament.

Political observers say the reshuffle reflects the ruling party’s willingness to make difficult decisions to safeguard governance standards, even at senior levels, signaling that no individual is above scrutiny when it comes to protecting national interest.
