MET Issues Yellow Alert, Severe Lightning Reported Across Hulhumalé

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 29, 2026

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a Yellow Alert for areas stretching from Kaafu Atoll to Laamu Atoll, as worsening weather conditions triggered intense lightning activity across parts of Hulhumalé.

The alert is in effect from 12:00 AM until 5:00 AM on April 29, with MET warning that moderate to heavy thunderstorms are expected during the period.

As the alert took effect, residents in multiple areas of Hulhumalé reported frequent lightning strikes, with many describing the activity as unusually intense. Heavy rain, strong winds and poor visibility were also reported in parts of the Greater Malé region.
