Leadership Shift at STELCO as Azuwar Steps Up

By Hussain Shinan Published April 28, 2026

Dr Ali Azuwar has been appointed as the new Managing Director of the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), marking a significant leadership transition at the country’s primary electricity provider.

Azuwar, who previously served as Deputy Managing Director, steps into the top role after more than two decades with the state-owned utility.

Longstanding Career in the Energy Sector

Having joined STELCO in 1997 as a trainee, Azuwar has steadily progressed through the organisation, taking on both technical and senior management responsibilities over the years.

His career has seen him lead several key divisions, including Sales and Marketing, Billing Services and Business Development, before moving into executive leadership roles as Chief Operating Officer and later Deputy Managing Director.

During this time, he played a central role in shaping operational strategies and strengthening the company’s administrative and policy frameworks.

Experience in Governance and Strategy

In addition to his executive responsibilities, Azuwar has served on STELCO’s Board of Directors as an executive member. He has also contributed to the wider state enterprise sector as a non-executive director at Fuel Supplies Maldives, where he advised on strategic and operational matters.

Officials say his appointment reflects a focus on continuity and institutional experience within the company.

Academic and Policy Expertise

Azuwar holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, where his research focused on renewable energy development in Small Island Developing States.

He also earned a Master of Public Policy from the National University of Singapore and a Bachelor’s degree with honours in Business Studies from the University of Sheffield.

His academic work and professional experience have largely centred on advancing sustainable energy solutions tailored to island economies.

International Engagement

Throughout his career, Azuwar has represented the Maldives at international forums across Asia, the Middle East and the United States, contributing to discussions on renewable energy, disaster resilience and energy policy.

He has also completed specialised training in corporate governance through programmes conducted by the Capital Market Development Authority.

Leadership at a Key Utility

STELCO plays a critical role in powering the Greater Malé region and other parts of the country, making Azuwar’s appointment a key development in the management of the Maldives’ energy sector.
