Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib has dismissed concerns circulating on social media regarding the structural quality of the Thilamalé Bridge, stating that the project is progressing without any defects.
Speaking to journalists during a site visit, the Minister addressed claims suggesting that the bridge has visible bends or uneven sections. He clarified that such impressions are misleading and result from viewing angles rather than actual construction flaws.
According to Muththalib, the bridge is a carefully engineered structure composed of interconnected segments, and any genuine defect would prevent proper alignment. He emphasized that the segments are fitted with precision, ensuring a level and stable surface throughout.
The Thilamalé Bridge is set to connect Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi, forming a key infrastructure link within the Greater Malé region.
The Minister added that once completed, the bridge will stand as a major engineering achievement, given its scale and complexity. Authorities have indicated that a significant portion of the project is expected to be completed by the end of next year, allowing travel between Malé and Vilimalé.
The project, valued at approximately 500 million US dollars, is being constructed by Afcons Infrastructure with financial support from the Government of India, including a line of credit from the EXIM Bank of India and a grant component.
Construction began under the previous administration, with limited progress achieved at the time. Officials noted that while less than a third of the project had been completed when the current government assumed office, overall progress has now exceeded 70 percent.
Muththalib reiterated that the work is proceeding in line with engineering standards, urging the public to rely on verified information rather than speculation.
