Heavy Rain and Rough Seas Expected Across Maldives: MET

By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned of worsening weather conditions across the country, forecasting widespread rain, thunderstorms, and rough seas throughout the day.

According to the latest update issued by the MET Office, unsettled weather is expected to continue across large parts of the Maldives until 6:00 PM today, with some islands likely to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

Officials noted that the country is currently in the peak period of the Hulhangu, or Southwest Monsoon, during which such weather disturbances are common.

Over the past 24 hours, heavy rain was recorded in several regions, particularly in the southern atolls. The highest rainfall was observed in Gan, where 47.8 millimeters of rain was recorded.

Other islands that experienced significant rainfall included Sh. Funadhoo with 32.7 millimeters, while Hithadhoo recorded 29.2 millimeters. Hulhumeedhoo in Addu City also saw 19.8 millimeters of rainfall.

Rainfall was additionally reported in islands across the central and southern regions, including L. Kadhdhoo, AA. Thoddoo, GA. Gemanafushi, K. Dhiffushi, and Fuvahmulah.

The MET Office stated that seas are expected to remain rough over the next 24 hours, with winds forecast from the west and northwest. Wind speeds are expected to range between 15 and 25 mph in the southern atolls, while other regions may experience winds between 13 and 23 mph.

During showers, wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, according to the forecast.

Wave heights are estimated to range between four and seven feet, prompting authorities to urge caution for small vessels and seafarers traveling during the period.

The MET Office advised the public and mariners to closely monitor weather updates and ensure safety precautions are taken before traveling. Residents have also been warned to prepare for possible flooding in low-lying areas and to secure loose outdoor items that may be affected by strong winds.

Authorities stated that weather conditions are being monitored continuously, with additional advisories expected if conditions worsen further.
