Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef, known as Mundhu, has sharply criticized former President Abdulla Yameen following the opposition meeting involving three former Maldivian presidents.
The remarks came after Yameen met with former presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during a gathering reportedly centered on issues related to press freedom and the country’s political direction.
Speaking at a recent rally organized by the People’s National Front (PNF), Yameen said that despite being jailed under both the Nasheed and Solih administrations, he had decided to move forward and work alongside them for what he described as the benefit of the country.
Responding to those comments, Mundhu said the former president appeared to have forgotten how previous administrations had treated him politically.
The spokesperson pointed out that Yameen spent a significant part of the Solih administration in prison and also recalled that Yameen had been detained during Nasheed’s presidency.
Mundhu specifically referenced the periods when Yameen was held in Dhoonidhoo and Aarah, noting that he had personally worked closely with Yameen during those years and had witnessed the events firsthand.
According to Mundhu, Yameen himself had previously spoken publicly about the hardships faced during those periods and the emotional impact the situation had on his family.
“For that reason, President Yameen is someone who forgets things very quickly,” Mundhu said, while criticizing the former president’s decision to politically align with leaders he once strongly opposed.
The meeting between the three former presidents has attracted significant political attention, with opposition figures describing it as a step toward strengthening cooperation on national issues, while government figures continue to question the credibility and political history of the alliance.
