Historic Direct Air Link Established Between Maldives and Australia

By Hussain Shinan Published 7 hours ago

Maldivian has officially launched direct flights between the Maldives and Australia, marking the first time in history that the two countries have been connected through nonstop air travel.

The airline’s inaugural flight to Melbourne departed from Malé last night using Maldivian’s largest aircraft, the Airbus A330.

Until now, travelers between the Maldives and Australia were required to transit through third countries, often involving lengthy layovers and multiple connections.

According to Maldivian, the new service represents a major milestone not only for the airline but also for the country’s aviation sector and tourism industry.

“This is a gateway opened to unforgettable journeys to a new destination. It is also a source of pride and honor for the Maldives,” the airline said in a statement shared on social media.

The flight duration between Malé and Melbourne is expected to range between 10 and 11 hours.

The weekly scheduled service is being operated in collaboration with Australian travel company Luxury Escapes, with one direct flight planned every week.

The launch follows the signing of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement between the Maldives and Australia in March this year. The agreement allows airlines from both countries to operate direct services without restrictions.

The new route further expands Maldivian’s growing international network. The airline’s A330 aircraft currently operates scheduled services to several cities in China as well as to Dhaka.

Maldivian has also announced plans to begin flights to Thailand during the upcoming school holiday season.

Over the years, the national carrier has operated flights to destinations including Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia on various occasions. The airline is also currently transporting Maldivian pilgrims traveling for this year’s Hajj season.

The launch of direct Australia flights is expected to strengthen tourism, trade and connectivity between the Maldives and Australia while also creating easier travel opportunities for students, tourists and business travelers.
