Advanced laser-based surgical procedures have officially commenced at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Dharumavantha Hospital, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to modernize healthcare services in the Maldives.
The new services, launched this week, allow several common general surgery procedures to be performed using minimally invasive laser technology, reducing pain, shortening recovery times and minimizing the need for prolonged hospital admissions.
According to hospital officials, the newly introduced procedures target conditions that have historically required lengthy hospital stays and extended recovery periods for patients.
Data collected by IGMH from 2023 to 2025 showed that a large number of patients visiting outpatient departments required treatment for conditions now covered under the new laser surgery programme.
The hospitals noted that traditional treatment methods for these illnesses often involved major surgical incisions, lengthy healing periods and significant post-operative discomfort.
With the introduction of laser-assisted surgery, patients are expected to experience faster recovery, lower infection risks and reduced complications compared to conventional procedures.
Under the newly launched service, four specialized operations are now being performed by the general surgery teams at both hospitals using advanced laser systems.
The procedures include:
- Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) for swollen and knotted leg veins
- Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty for hemorrhoids (piles)
- Fistula Tract Laser Closure for anal fistulas
- Sinus Laser Closure for pilonidal sinus conditions
Hospital officials explained that these procedures can treat and close affected areas without the need for large surgical cuts, significantly reducing pain and the risk of infection or pus formation.
They also highlighted that patients undergoing laser procedures will either avoid hospital admission entirely or require only minimal stays before returning home and resuming work more quickly.
IGMH stated that the necessary medical equipment and surgical supplies for the services have already been procured.
To prepare for the launch, surgeons and operating theatre nurses from the Department of Surgery underwent specialized training and workshops at hospitals in India to gain practical experience in laser-based surgical techniques.
The expansion of advanced healthcare services and the introduction of modern medical technologies remain among the key priorities of President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, which has repeatedly emphasized improving access to high-quality treatment within the Maldives.
