Work is progressing on the development of Addu City’s new Central Power Station, with the manufacturing of key generating engines now underway, according to Fenaka Corporation Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hussain.
The project is one of the largest power infrastructure initiatives currently being undertaken in the Maldives and is intended to provide a long-term solution to electricity challenges in Addu City.
Speaking to state media, Afeef said implementation of the project remains on schedule and has now entered a critical stage involving the production of the power station’s generators.
Once completed, the facility will replace the current arrangement under which multiple powerhouses operate independently across different districts of Addu. The new system is expected to centralize electricity generation and improve efficiency, reliability and service quality throughout the city.
The project includes the installation of five generators, each with a capacity of 5.2 megawatts, significantly boosting Addu’s electricity production capability.
In addition to the generators, plans call for the construction of a modern powerhouse and a dedicated fuel farm to support operations. Arrangements are also being made to facilitate bunkering services as part of the wider development.
Fenaka officials said specialized training is being provided to company personnel in Belgium to prepare staff for operating and maintaining the advanced equipment that will be installed at the new facility.
According to Afeef, the government is targeting completion of the entire project by July next year. He expressed confidence that the new power station will provide a lasting solution to the electricity issues faced by residents and businesses in Addu City.
The project contract was awarded to Dubai-based Definite Solutions and officially handed over to the company on March 7.
The power station will be equipped with low-speed engines manufactured by Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC), a Belgian company known internationally for power generation technology.
The Addu Central Power Station forms part of broader efforts to strengthen energy infrastructure nationwide and improve the reliability of essential utility services across the Maldives.
