The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has warned that rough seas and strong winds will continue across much of the country today, with squalls capable of producing wind gusts of up to 40 mph.
According to the latest forecast, adverse weather conditions are expected to affect both northern and southern atolls over the next 24 hours. Heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the northern atolls, while scattered showers are forecast across the central region. Some islands in both the northern and southern atolls could also experience periods of intense rainfall.
The MET Office said winds in the northern and central atolls will blow from the southwest and west at speeds of 13 to 23 mph. In the south, winds are expected from the south and southwest at 5 to 15 mph. However, wind speeds are forecast to increase significantly during squalls, reaching around 40 mph.
Sea conditions are expected to remain rough in the northern and central atolls, with wave heights ranging between 4 and 7 feet. Southern seas are forecast to be moderate, although they could temporarily become rough during squalls, with waves reaching between 2 and 5 feet.
The weather warning comes as government offices, schools and businesses reopen following the Eid holiday period, with many people travelling back to Malé and islands across the country.
The Maldives is currently in the Southwest Monsoon season, locally known as Hulhangu, which typically brings stronger winds, rougher seas and periods of heavy rain. Authorities are urging seafarers and travellers to closely monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions before undertaking sea journeys.
