Commuters in the Greater Malé Region can now access the Male’ Taxi Line service directly from Android devices, following the launch of the application’s Android version on the Google Play Store.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which operates the state-run taxi service, announced that the app is now available for Android users after initially being released exclusively for Apple devices through the App Store.
The expansion is expected to make the service more accessible to a wider segment of the public, allowing passengers to book rides directly from their smartphones without relying solely on the hotline or web-based platform.
Introduced as part of efforts to modernise public transport services in the Greater Malé area, the Male’ Taxi Line app enables users to request taxis, track trips and manage payments through a single platform.
According to MTCC, the application also offers an advance booking feature, allowing passengers to schedule journeys at least three hours before their intended travel time.
The company said several payment options have been integrated into the platform to improve convenience for users. Customers can top up funds to an in-app wallet, make payments through a bank card gateway, or use the Scan and Pay feature after completing a trip.
The application also stores information on previous rides and upcoming bookings, allowing passengers to easily review their travel history.
Safety and customer convenience have been given particular emphasis in the app’s design. MTCC noted that an emergency assistance feature has been included for use during urgent situations, while passengers can also contact drivers directly through in-app calling and messaging functions.
Users who accidentally leave personal belongings behind in a taxi can report lost items through the application as well.
The Male’ Taxi Line was launched by MTCC earlier this year as part of the government’s efforts to address long-standing concerns regarding taxi availability and service reliability in the capital region.
The service currently operates with a fleet of 150 environmentally friendly electric vehicles and provides round-the-clock transportation across Malé, Hulhulé and Hulhumalé at rates approved by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
The introduction of the Android application follows the recent launch of the iOS version and marks another step in the continued development of the service.
When the Male’ Taxi Line was first introduced on April 2, passengers were able to request rides through a web application and hotline services. However, technical and security-related issues affecting the original platform led MTCC to temporarily suspend some digital services and provide free rides for an extended period while improvements were carried out.
The company says the latest version of the application has been designed to offer a more secure, reliable and user-friendly experience while supporting broader efforts to strengthen public transportation through modern technology.
As demand for the service continues to grow, MTCC expects the expanded availability of the app to make taxi bookings faster and more convenient for thousands of daily commuters across the Greater Malé area.
