President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Hassan Zareer as Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, entrusting one of the government’s most critical portfolios to a veteran financial administrator with decades of experience in public finance, taxation and corporate governance.
Zareer was sworn in during a ceremony at the President’s Office on Monday afternoon, following the resignation of former Finance Minister Moosa Zameer.
The newly appointed minister most recently served as Commissioner General of Taxation at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), a position he has held since May 2024. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Asia Initiative of the Global Forum on Tax Transparency under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Zareer brings extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. Prior to leading MIRA, he served as Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation for nearly a decade and held senior financial leadership roles within the Villa Group. He also previously worked at the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, where he was involved in public finance reform and state accounting initiatives.
Academically, Zareer holds a Master of Science in Finance and a Bachelor of Accounting from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He is also a Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA, CGMA) and a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA Australia).
His appointment comes at a pivotal time as the government continues efforts to strengthen fiscal stability, manage public debt and advance ongoing economic reforms under President Muizzu’s administration.
