India Delivers 20,000 Measles Vaccine Doses to Strengthen Maldives Response

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

Minister of Health, Family and Welfare today expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of India for providing 20,000 doses of measles vaccines and approximately three tonnes of medical supplies to support the Maldives’ ongoing response to rising measles cases.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Minister said the timely assistance comes at a critical moment as the Maldives strengthens its public health response and preparedness against emerging infectious disease threats. The donation includes Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccines, laboratory consumables, personal protective equipment, and other essential medical supplies.

The Minister noted that the assistance will directly enhance the country’s capacity to prevent disease transmission, improve laboratory testing and surveillance, and ensure the protection of frontline healthcare workers engaged in response efforts across the country.

According to a statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on June 11, India dispatched the vaccine consignment and medical supplies to help strengthen immunization coverage and safeguard public health in the Maldives. The ministry stated that the support would assist in addressing the increasing number of measles cases and reinforce the Maldivian government’s response measures.

The Indian government further emphasized that the Maldives holds a special place in India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, reaffirming its commitment to working closely with the Maldives on shared priorities for the benefit of both countries.

The Health Minister also highlighted the importance of the longstanding Maldives-India partnership, stating that cooperation between the two countries continues to play a vital role in strengthening the Maldivian health system and enhancing national health security.

The Government of Maldives extended its gratitude to the Government and people of India for their continued solidarity and support during the ongoing public health response.
