The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that 90 percent of the first phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project on the northern side of Malé has now been completed, with the remaining works advancing rapidly toward completion.
According to MTCC, quay wall capping concrete works have been fully completed, marking another major milestone in the project. The company said the remaining key works are progressing at a fast pace as crews move towards completing the first phase.
The first phase covers five segments stretching from the Official Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal. Segments 4 and 5, extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building, have already been fully asphalted. Road marking, streetlight installation and traffic signboard works are currently underway in these sections.
For Segments 2 and 3, MTCC said sub-base preparation and the laying of the Aggregate Base Course (ABC) are expected to be completed tonight. Asphalt paving on both segments is scheduled to be completed within this week.
The redevelopment includes widening the roadway through the reconstruction of the quay wall and installing a modern drainage system to improve flood resilience and the long-term durability of the road. MTCC said the road will be opened to the public once all asphalt works have been completed.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu Development Project is one of the government’s flagship infrastructure projects aimed at providing a long-term solution to traffic congestion in Malé and improving connectivity along the capital’s northern coastline.
Earlier phases upgraded the section from Izzudheen Magu to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal, receiving positive feedback from motorists for smoother traffic flow and improved driving conditions. Although the project was originally scheduled for completion in June, MTCC now expects the remaining works to be finished by July 26. Once completed, the entire stretch from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Malé North Harbour will feature a widened, fully asphalted roadway supported by upgraded drainage and coastal infrastructure.
