President Dr Mohamed Muizzu departed for the State of Qatar on Monday morning on an official visit to convey condolences following the passing of former Qatari Amir, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
According to the President’s Office, President Muizzu will pay his respects to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, and members of the Qatari Royal Family during the visit.
The former Amir passed away on Sunday, prompting an outpouring of condolences from leaders around the world. A number of foreign dignitaries are also expected to travel to Qatar to join the Royal Family in mourning his passing.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani led Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and oversaw a period of rapid economic growth and global engagement. During his leadership, relations between the Maldives and Qatar strengthened through increased bilateral cooperation, development assistance, and closer diplomatic ties. President Muizzu had earlier described Sheikh Hamad’s passing as a profound loss and extended condolences to the leadership and people of Qatar.
