The Maldives Police Service has urged football fans to celebrate responsibly ahead of tonight’s highly anticipated match between Argentina and England, reminding supporters to respect their neighbours and avoid disturbing the public.
In a statement, police called on fans to keep noise levels low during the late-night match, noting that many people would be resting. The service advised against excessive honking, loud music, and other disruptive behaviour in residential areas and on public streets.
Police also asked those watching the game at public screening venues to park motorcycles responsibly so they do not obstruct traffic or inconvenience other road users. Authorities further discouraged large post-match gatherings and motorcycle rallies, warning that such activities could disrupt neighbourhoods and hinder the movement of the public.
The statement concluded by encouraging supporters to enjoy the match while considering the well-being of children, elderly residents, and fellow community members.
The advisory comes as social media users have shared complaints about large crowds celebrating football matches in previous years, including gatherings involving some members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community. The posts have also attracted racist and xenophobic comments directed at migrant workers.
While concerns about noise, traffic, or public order are legitimate, they should not be used to target any nationality or community. Public order laws apply equally to everyone, regardless of citizenship or ethnic background. The police statement did not single out any nationality, instead issuing a general appeal for all fans to celebrate responsibly.
