The newly redeveloped section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé will open to the public today at 4:00 p.m., marking a significant milestone in the capital’s ongoing waterfront redevelopment.
Housing, Land and Urban Development Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib announced the opening while speaking to reporters after a tree planting event held in the newly developed parking area.
The minister said the road will be opened for public use once the remaining work is completed, without a formal inauguration ceremony.
“Our plan is to open the road to the public starting from 4:00 PM today once the work is finalized. There won’t be a formal ceremony. We will simply open it for public use as soon as the construction is complete,” he said.
Dr. Muththalib said the tree planting initiative is intended to create a greener and more welcoming public space while enhancing the appearance of Malé’s waterfront. He added that palm trees will also be planted in designated areas, with additional landscaping planned through the introduction of flowering plants.
He also said preparations are progressing for the wider redevelopment of roads in Malé and Villimalé. Survey work has already begun under a road improvement programme being implemented through grant assistance from the Chinese government.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment forms part of the government’s broader effort to modernise Malé’s transport infrastructure. The project includes widening the road, constructing new quay walls, upgrading stormwater drainage and utility networks, creating pedestrian walkways, and developing parking areas with space for around 500 motorcycles. The current phase covers an 830 metre stretch of roadway, including 737 metres of sheet piling, and is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce flooding and provide additional berthing space along the capital’s northern waterfront.
