The first phase of the long-awaited Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project has been completed, with the newly modernised road now open for public use, bringing significant relief to motorists and residents who have faced years of heavy congestion along one of Malé’s busiest routes.
The completed section covers the first five segments of the project, stretching approximately 700 metres from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Presidential Jetty. The road has been widened through land reclamation, resurfaced with asphalt and upgraded to improve traffic flow and public access.
According to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the road has been opened while only minor finishing works remain. These include installing railings on quay wall staircases and placing red-painted curb stones near the stairways to enhance visibility and safety.
The redevelopment also places strong emphasis on creating a greener waterfront. Working alongside government ministries and state-owned enterprises, MTCC has carried out extensive landscaping, planting more than 3,100 trees and plants between the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and the Malé North Harbour. Traditional Maldivian coconut palms have also been planted along the seafront to enhance the area’s appearance.
To preserve smooth traffic movement and maintain the road’s modern design, parking is prohibited along the newly opened carriageway. A dedicated parking facility with space for around 500 motorcycles has been established in front of the Bank of Maldives to accommodate commuters.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment is being implemented in multiple phases, with additional sections between the Presidential Jetty and the North Harbour also opened following their completion.
The project has been widely welcomed by the public, as traffic congestion along Boduthakurufaanu Magu has been a longstanding concern for residents, businesses and daily commuters. Many have described the opening as a major improvement to mobility in the Greater Malé region.
The redevelopment forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision to modernise the capital’s transport infrastructure. The President personally oversaw the project’s progress and repeatedly instructed that the work be expedited to deliver long-awaited relief to the public, making the opening of the first phase a significant milestone in his administration’s urban development agenda.
