President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on Maldivians to protect the nation’s hard-earned independence by strengthening patriotism, empowering young people, preserving national identity, and fostering social unity.
In a social media message marking the Maldives’ 61st Independence Day on Sunday, the President extended his greetings to all citizens and paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom.
“We offer our sincere prayers and profound gratitude to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for our nation’s freedom,” President Muizzu said.
He stressed that the greatest responsibility of the current generation is to safeguard the independence secured through the sacrifices of previous generations. The President said this responsibility can only be fulfilled by placing greater emphasis on patriotism, youth empowerment, protecting the nation’s identity, and strengthening social cohesion.
President Muizzu also urged citizens to embrace these values and work together to ensure the Maldives continues on a path of progress.
He concluded his Independence Day message by expressing confidence that determination, courage, and hard work would lead the nation towards continued success.
The Maldives celebrates Independence Day every year on 26 July, commemorating the country’s independence from the British Protectorate in 1965. This year marks the 61st anniversary of that historic milestone.
