Pump Station Installation Underway on Boduthakurufaanu Magu

By Hussain Shinan Published 9 hours ago

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) says work is progressing on the installation of three stormwater pump stations along the newly redeveloped Boduthakurufaanu Magu, with the project expected to be completed by the middle of this month.

According to MTCC, construction of the pump wells and installation of the pumping equipment are currently underway as part of the road’s stormwater drainage system. The company said it is working to complete, test and commission all three pump stations by August 15.

The pump stations form part of the wider Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project, which includes a modern drainage network designed to improve the road’s ability to cope with heavy rainfall and reduce flooding.

MTCC explained that the newly widened road was opened to traffic immediately after the main construction works were completed, even though installation of the drainage infrastructure was still ongoing. The decision, the company said, was taken to minimise disruption to motorists and reduce the inconvenience caused by prolonged road closures.

The state-owned contractor had previously confirmed that work on the three pump stations was still in progress and reiterated that the facilities are expected to become operational once installation and testing are completed.

Until then, MTCC said it will continue to carry out temporary dewatering operations if heavy monsoon rain results in flooding along Boduthakurufaanu Magu.

Flooding during periods of intense rainfall has long been a challenge in Malé, where much of the road and drainage infrastructure dates back to the 1990s. Water accumulation on major roads has frequently disrupted traffic, while ageing drainage systems have struggled to cope with heavy downpours.

The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project is one of the government’s largest road infrastructure initiatives aimed at addressing those issues. The recently completed section between the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and Malé North Harbour was widened into a four-lane carriageway, resurfaced with asphalt and designed with an upgraded stormwater drainage system.

The government has also announced plans to continue the redevelopment of the remaining stretch from Malé North Harbour to Tsunami Monument Park. In parallel, preparations are underway for the rehabilitation of Ameenee Magu and additional road improvement projects across the capital as part of broader efforts to modernise Malé’s transport infrastructure.
