State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has begun a series of infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving the reliability and long-term sustainability of water services in K. Huraa, as the utility continues efforts to strengthen public services on the island.
The company said work is currently underway to replace the damaged high-pressure pump and motor at one of Huraa’s reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plants, with a new pump being installed to restore the facility’s operational capacity.
At the same time, technicians are carrying out repairs on another RO plant that has remained out of service for the past eight months due to technical faults.
According to STELCO, restoring these facilities will significantly improve the island’s water production capability while expanding storage capacity to better meet the needs of residents.
The company said bringing all three desalination plants into operation will ensure sufficient production to satisfy Huraa’s current water demand and provide a more reliable water supply.
STELCO assumed responsibility for electricity, water and sewerage services in K. Huraa in May as part of efforts to improve utility services on the island.
Since taking over operations, the state-owned utility has been working to upgrade infrastructure and improve service delivery, with the stated goal of providing customers with uninterrupted, high-quality electricity and water services.
Across the Maldives, many inhabited islands rely on reverse osmosis desalination plants for their freshwater supply. Maintaining these systems and upgrading ageing equipment are considered essential to ensuring stable water production, particularly during periods of increased demand.
The latest improvements in Huraa form part of STELCO’s broader efforts to modernise utility infrastructure and strengthen essential public services in the islands under its management.
