Modern Auditing, Technology at Heart of New Audit Office Strategy

By Hussain Shinan Published 2 hours ago

The Auditor General’s Office has launched a new four-year Strategic Plan aimed at strengthening public sector auditing, enhancing institutional capacity and expanding the use of modern auditing practices between 2026 and 2029.

The strategy was officially launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during the closing ceremony of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Supreme Audit Institutions Symposium, held in AA. Ukulhas.

The new roadmap outlines the office’s key priorities for the next four years, setting the direction for how it intends to improve oversight of public finances while responding to emerging governance and accountability challenges.

Speaking at the launch, Auditor General Hussain Niyazy described the strategy as a modern, forward-looking framework designed to strengthen the institution and deliver greater value to the public.

“Today marks an important milestone for the Maldives as we introduce our strategic plan for the next four years. It has been developed with the national interest at its core and with the objective of delivering the greatest possible benefit to the public,” Niyazy said.

According to the Auditor General, the strategy places particular emphasis on strengthening oversight of public debt management, improving the understanding of environmental and sustainability-related risks, and assessing how effectively government policies are being implemented.

The plan also introduces greater focus on specialised areas of auditing, including forensic audits, information systems audits, and other technical reviews that reflect the evolving nature of public sector governance.

In addition, the Auditor General’s Office intends to invest in staff development, expand the use of technology in audit processes and adopt internationally recognised auditing methodologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Niyazy said the office also plans to deepen collaboration with national institutions and international partners as it works to strengthen the country’s public accountability framework.

The launch of the new strategic plan comes at a time when public audit institutions are increasingly expected to go beyond traditional financial audits by examining areas such as digital governance, environmental sustainability, public policy implementation and the effective use of public resources.

As the Maldives’ independent external audit institution, the Auditor General’s Office is responsible for auditing government ministries, state-owned enterprises and other public bodies, helping ensure transparency, accountability and sound financial management across the public sector.
