President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has held discussions with AA. Ukulhas Council, the island’s Women’s Development Committee (WDC) and representatives of local institutions, focusing on key development priorities and infrastructure needs for the island.
The meeting took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Ukulhas Convention Centre Administrative Office during the President’s official visit to the island.
According to information shared by the President’s Office, council members outlined several challenges facing the community, with housing emerging as one of the main concerns. The council requested additional housing projects to address the growing demand for residential land and homes on the island.
Another major issue raised during the meeting was the need to expand the island’s land area. Council members proposed further land reclamation to extend the existing reclaimed area and asked the government to provide essential utility services—including water, sewerage and electricity—as well as road infrastructure to support future development.
The council also highlighted constraints in securing land for the planned expansion of the island’s powerhouse, saying additional space is needed to accommodate future utility requirements as the population continues to grow.
Waste management and fuel supply were also discussed during the meeting. Council representatives requested that responsibility for managing the island’s waste be transferred to the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) and called for measures to improve access to affordable fuel.
Responding to the concerns, President Muizzu assured participants that the issues raised would be reviewed by the government. Cabinet ministers accompanying the President also provided updates on ongoing development projects currently being implemented in Ukulhas.
The meeting formed part of the President’s official visit to Ukulhas, where he attended the closing ceremony of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Supreme Audit Institutions Symposium and the opening of the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI) Global Summit.
Ukulhas has gained recognition in recent years for its environmental initiatives and tourism development. As the island’s population and visitor numbers continue to grow, local authorities have been advocating for expanded housing, improved public utilities and upgraded infrastructure to meet increasing demand.
