President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and institutional reform during a meeting with heads of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and members of the international delegation attending the SIDS-SAI Symposium 2026.
The meeting took place in AA. Ukulhas following the closing ceremony of the SIDS-SAI Symposium and the opening of the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI) Global Summit 2026.
During the discussions, President Muizzu said strengthening accountability and promoting good governance remain among the government’s highest priorities. He highlighted ongoing legal and institutional reforms aimed at preventing corruption and reinforcing transparency across public institutions, adding that the administration continues to receive strong public support for these initiatives.
The President also shared updates on the government’s Maldives 2.0 programme, describing digital transformation as a key pillar of public sector reform. He said the administration aims to fully digitalise government services within the next two years while introducing stronger legal and institutional frameworks inspired by internationally recognised governance models, including Estonia’s digital government system.
Members of the international delegation commended the Maldives for successfully hosting the summit, describing it as an important platform for strengthening cooperation among Small Island Developing States.
The delegates also praised Auditor General Hussain Niyazy and the Maldivian government for their efforts to elevate the concerns and priorities of SIDS on international platforms. They noted that the participation of Cabinet ministers and senior government officials throughout the event reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening public accountability and institutional governance.
President Muizzu, in turn, congratulated the Auditor General and the staff of the Auditor General’s Office for organising the international gathering, while also highlighting the opportunity the event provided to showcase Maldivian culture, hospitality and the country’s capacity to host global conferences.
Among those attending the meeting were Auditor General Hussain Niyazy, INTOSAI Chair representative Manal Mohamed Khairy, IDI Director General Einar Gørrissen, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) representative Aranzazu Guillen Montero, and heads of Supreme Audit Institutions from Small Island Developing States.
The symposium and IDI Global Summit brought together audit leaders, governance experts and development partners from across the SIDS community to exchange knowledge, strengthen institutional capacity and discuss the role of independent public auditing in promoting transparency, accountability and sustainable development.
