Residents of AA. Ukulhas now have access to a new outdoor volleyball facility following the official opening of a modern court during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island.
The court was inaugurated by the President at a special ceremony held on Tuesday, marking the completion of a project aimed at expanding sports infrastructure and creating more recreational opportunities for island communities.
Construction of the facility began on 16 July last year after the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation awarded the contract to Proxy Group Private Limited.
The project was completed at a cost of MVR 1.36 million.
Designed as a fully equipped outdoor venue, the new court features a modern playing surface and a complete lighting system, allowing matches and training sessions to continue after sunset.
Following the inauguration, a friendly volleyball match was held to officially mark the opening of the facility.
The new court forms part of the government’s broader initiative to improve access to sports facilities across the Maldives. According to the government, volleyball court construction projects are currently underway on 10 islands as part of efforts to encourage greater community participation in sports and promote healthy lifestyles.
Volleyball remains one of the most popular sports in the Maldives, particularly in island communities where local tournaments play an important role in community life. The expansion of dedicated facilities is expected to provide athletes and young people with improved spaces for training, competition and recreational activities.
The government has continued to invest in sports infrastructure alongside community development projects, with the aim of increasing opportunities for participation while supporting the growth of sports across the country.
