Fenaka Corporation has become the third state-owned enterprise (SOE) in the Maldives to fully comply with the proactive disclosure requirements under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, marking another milestone in efforts to strengthen transparency and public access to information.
With the achievement, information that public institutions are legally required to disclose is now available through Fenaka’s official website, allowing members of the public to access key corporate information without submitting formal RTI requests.
The published information includes details on the corporation’s administration, organisational structure, financial statements and decisions of public interest, in line with the disclosure obligations set out under the RTI Act.
Fenaka said the milestone forms part of the company’s broader efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability. The corporation also highlighted ongoing initiatives led by Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hussain to improve corporate governance and ensure the company’s operations are conducted in an open and transparent manner.
According to the company, additional work is underway to further strengthen its information disclosure framework and improve the speed and quality of responses to RTI requests. Fenaka said it has also enhanced its internal accountability mechanisms to ensure information requests are handled more efficiently.
The utility provider is also preparing to launch a redesigned corporate website, which is expected to make public information and services easier to access while improving the overall user experience.
The Right to Information Act, which came into force in 2014, requires public institutions to proactively publish key categories of information, including organisational responsibilities, budgets, procurement details, financial reports and decision-making processes. The law was introduced to promote transparency, strengthen public accountability and improve citizens’ access to information.
The Information Commissioner’s Office has been encouraging state institutions to achieve full compliance with the Act’s proactive disclosure requirements. Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and State Electric Company (STELCO) were the first two state-owned enterprises to meet the required standard, with Fenaka now joining that list.
As one of the country’s largest utility providers, Fenaka delivers electricity, water and sewerage services to communities across the Maldives. The company said improving transparency remains an important part of its efforts to strengthen public confidence and corporate governance.
This version mentions the Managing Director in a way that attributes the effort to the company rather than asserting a subjective claim such as “sincere efforts,” which is more appropriate for a news article.
