President Muizzu inaugurates PGO 2.0 digital transformation project

By Hussain Shinan Published 3 hours ago

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated PGO 2.0, a major digital transformation project aimed at fully digitising the Prosecutor General’s Office and introducing Artificial Intelligence to support prosecution services.

The project was officially launched by the President on Tuesday as part of efforts to modernise the operations of the Prosecutor General’s Office and make its services more accessible to the public.

PGO 2.0 is scheduled to be implemented over the next two years, during which the office plans to transition away from paper-based processes and move its operations onto a fully digital system.

One of the central objectives of the initiative is to bring public services together through a single, transparent digital platform, allowing people to access services more conveniently while improving the efficiency of internal processes.

Artificial Intelligence will also be incorporated into prosecution work under the project.

According to the PGO, AI-powered tools will assist prosecutors with time-consuming tasks including legal research, assessment of evidence and preparation of legal documents. The office expects the technology to reduce the amount of time required for such work while also accelerating administrative procedures.

The PGO stressed, however, that AI will serve as an assisting tool and will not replace prosecutors in making decisions. Final decisions relating to cases will continue to remain in human hands.

Several other digital services and resources were unveiled during the ceremony marking the inauguration of PGO 2.0.

The PGO’s new website was launched by Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, while the Minister of Foreign Affairs inaugurated “Virtual Dhoroashi”, an online portal through which members of the public can access services without physically visiting the PGO’s service counter.

Attorney General Ahmed Usham also launched the “Lethun” mobile application, a centralised platform providing access to criminal justice legislation, court rulings and English translations.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, meanwhile, released “Evidence: A Practitioner’s Guide”, a publication compiled by the PGO Academy.

The inauguration comes as the government moves forward with its wider digitalisation agenda under Maldives 2.0, an initiative President Muizzu has said will transform the delivery of public services through greater use of technology and interconnected government systems.

The President has set July 26, 2028 as the target for the full implementation of Maldives 2.0, with digital transformation planned across several areas of government.

PGO 2.0 will bring the Prosecutor General’s Office into that wider transformation, with the two-year project expected to introduce paperless operations, expand online access to services and incorporate AI tools into the day-to-day work of prosecutors.
