Electricity generation capacity in R. Inguraidhoo is set to nearly double following the delivery of a new 800 kW generator, as Fenaka Corporation moves to strengthen the island’s power supply.
The new generator has already been transported to Inguraidhoo, with installation work currently underway at the island’s powerhouse.
Fenaka said the work is expected to be completed by the end of next week, after which the new unit will be connected to the island’s electricity grid.
Once the upgrade is completed, the powerhouse will have a total generation capacity of 2,200 kW, up from the 1,200 kW available before the latest expansion.
Fenaka said the additional capacity is part of its efforts to maintain a stable and sustainable electricity service for residents while strengthening the powerhouse’s ability to meet demand.
Following the upgrade, four generators will be operated at the Inguraidhoo powerhouse. These will comprise the new 800 kW unit, a 600 kW generator and two 400 kW generators.
An older 250 kW generator that had previously been used to support electricity generation on the island will be taken out of service as part of the changes.
The replacement of older generation equipment with higher-capacity units is expected to provide greater operational flexibility at the powerhouse, particularly when generators are taken offline for routine servicing or maintenance.
Fenaka operates utility services across a large number of inhabited islands outside the Greater Malé region, including electricity, water and sewerage services.
The company has been carrying out upgrades to generation infrastructure in different islands as electricity consumption increases alongside population growth, new housing, businesses and other infrastructure development.
For Inguraidhoo, Fenaka said the latest capacity expansion is intended to provide residents with a more reliable and continuous electricity supply while improving the overall quality of the service.
The new 800 kW generator is expected to enter operation once installation and integration works are completed next week.
