Fenaka Corporation has delivered a new 1,200 kW generator set to HDh. Hanimaadhoo as part of efforts to expand electricity generation capacity and provide a more reliable power supply on the island.
The additional generator is intended to address pressure on the existing system during periods of high electricity consumption, particularly at peak hours.
According to Fenaka, the Hanimaadhoo powerhouse currently has a total generation capacity of 3,500 kW. Once the newly delivered generator is installed and commissioned, the company’s available generation capacity on the island is expected to increase to 4,400 kW.
Fenaka said bringing the generator into operation will provide additional capacity to meet peak demand and reduce the risk of interruptions when electricity consumption is high.
The upgrade is also expected to give the powerhouse greater flexibility in managing its generation units, allowing electricity demand to be met more reliably while individual generators undergo routine maintenance or repairs.
Hanimaadhoo is one of the key population and transport centres in the northern Maldives and is home to Hanimaadhoo International Airport. Electricity demand on the island is expected to remain an important consideration as infrastructure and economic activity continue to develop.
The latest addition comes as Fenaka continues to strengthen generation capacity across islands within its electricity service network. The company has been delivering and installing new generator sets in several islands where additional capacity is required to meet existing demand and accommodate future growth.
Fenaka recently delivered a 1,000 kW generator to HA. Hoarafushi, with installation underway to strengthen generation capacity on that island as well.
Unlike the interconnected electricity networks found in larger countries, many Maldivian islands rely on individual powerhouses serving their respective communities. Maintaining sufficient generation and reserve capacity is therefore important to ensure electricity can continue to be supplied during periods of high demand, maintenance or technical issues affecting individual units.
Fenaka said the new Hanimaadhoo generator is ultimately aimed at providing residents with a more stable and uninterrupted electricity service once installation and commissioning are completed.
