President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the Sinamalé Bridge as a powerful symbol of the enduring friendship between the Maldives and China, as the country marks the 8th anniversary of the landmark infrastructure project.
In a message commemorating the bridge, President Muizzu said the project represents more than physical connectivity, reflecting the trust, confidence and shared vision for progress between the two countries.
The President expressed confidence that Maldives-China relations would continue to strengthen under Chinese President Xi Jinping, creating further opportunities for the people of both nations. He also reaffirmed his commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation.
President Muizzu visited the bridge area to mark the occasion, where he inspected the site and toured a photo exhibition documenting the bridge’s construction and inauguration. He also walked along the bridge to observe its current condition.
The Sinamalé Bridge, officially opened on August 30, 2018, connects Malé with Hulhulé and Hulhumalé and transformed road connectivity between the capital, Velana International Airport and the country’s largest urban development area.
President Muizzu served as Minister of Housing and Infrastructure during the project’s implementation.
Spanning 1.39 kilometres and measuring 20.3 metres wide, the bridge includes two lanes for four-wheeled vehicles as well as dedicated motorcycle lanes.
The USD 200 million project was financed through a USD 116 million grant from China, a USD 72 million Chinese concessional loan and a USD 12 million contribution from the Maldives government.
