State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced the winners of a children’s drawing competition organised to mark Engineering Day, with young participants challenged to illustrate the work carried out by engineers across the utility company.
Held under the theme “STELCO Engineers,” the competition invited participants to creatively portray the different engineering professions involved in STELCO’s operations and the services they provide.
The competition highlighted several engineering fields, including electrical, mechanical, civil, software, renewable energy, and water and sewerage engineering, giving children an opportunity to explore the range of technical professions involved in delivering essential services.
Participants competed across two age groups, with separate categories for children aged five to 10 and those aged 11 to 16.
In the younger category, Yaleena Aish Hussain secured first place, followed by Yaria Aain Hussain in second. Aireen Binth Ahusan was awarded third place.
Among participants aged 11 to 16, Aishath Raina took first place, while Aishath Naya Mohamed finished second and Raina Rilwan Husnee secured third.
STELCO awarded MVR 2,500 to each first-place winner, while second and third-place winners received MVR 1,500 and MVR 1,000, respectively. Participants finishing between fourth and 10th place were each awarded MVR 500.
The initiative was organised as part of activities surrounding Engineering Day, which seeks to highlight the contribution engineers make to the country’s infrastructure, utilities and development.
For STELCO, engineering forms the backbone of its operations, with professionals from multiple disciplines involved in electricity generation and distribution, infrastructure development, renewable energy projects and other technical services.
The drawing competition also provided a way to introduce engineering to younger generations beyond a traditional classroom setting, encouraging children to consider how different types of engineers contribute to services they encounter in everyday life.
STELCO has also been participating in wider Engineering Day activities aimed at children and families. The company took part in the Engineering Day 2026 Children’s Evening at Hulhumalé Central Park, organised by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development.
Public competitions and community initiatives organised by the utility have typically attracted strong participation, with the Engineering Day drawing competition similarly providing children with an opportunity to combine creativity with an understanding of engineering professions.
