Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has held an official celebration to mark Maldives Engineers’ Day, recognising the engineers and other employees responsible for maintaining the company’s essential utility services.
The event brought together employees from across MWSC to acknowledge the contribution of engineering professionals to the company’s day-to-day operations and infrastructure development.
MWSC said engineering forms the foundation of much of its work, with engineers playing a central role in ensuring water and sewerage services continue to operate reliably for the communities served by the company.
During the celebration, MWSC highlighted the skill, dedication and resilience required from its engineering teams, while also recognising employees from other areas who contribute to keeping services operational around the clock.
Providing water and sewerage services requires expertise across multiple engineering disciplines, covering areas such as water production and treatment, distribution networks, pumping systems, sewerage infrastructure, mechanical and electrical systems, and the development and maintenance of utility facilities.
The role of engineers has grown alongside MWSC’s expanding operations. In addition to serving the Greater Malé region, the state-owned utility is involved in the development and operation of water and sewerage infrastructure in other parts of the country.
Reliable utility infrastructure is particularly important in the Maldives due to the geographical separation of island communities and limited natural freshwater resources. Desalination and engineered distribution systems therefore play a major role in meeting the water requirements of densely populated areas.
MWSC described its Engineers’ Day celebration as an opportunity for employees to come together and recognise the people working behind its services, while highlighting the teamwork required to maintain essential infrastructure.
The company also thanked its engineers and the wider MWSC workforce for their contribution towards delivering services to the public.
Maldives Engineers’ Day is observed annually on August 30, with government institutions and state-owned companies holding a range of activities this year to recognise engineering professionals and encourage greater interest in the field among young Maldivians.
MWSC also participated in Engineers’ Day activities aimed at children, using the occasion to introduce younger audiences to engineering, innovation and the role technical professionals play in everyday life.
