President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inspected progress on the Thilamalé Bridge, walking across the newly connected final segment between Malé and Villingili as the landmark infrastructure project moves closer to completion.
The President was accompanied by Cabinet ministers and senior government officials during the inspection.
The final section connecting Malé and Villingili was joined last week, marking a major construction milestone for the 6.7-kilometre connectivity project linking Malé, Villingili, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi through bridges and causeways.
Construction began in 2022, with India’s Afcons Infrastructure carrying out the physical works. According to the government, overall project progress has now reached 76%.
When President Muizzu took office, around 30% of the project had been completed. His administration has since prioritised accelerating construction through coordination with the Indian government and the contractor following earlier delays.
The government is targeting completion of the Thilamalé Bridge by the end of 2027 while maintaining required construction and quality standards.
Valued at approximately USD 500 million, more than MVR 7 billion, the project is primarily financed by India through a USD 100 million grant and a USD 400 million Line of Credit, with additional support from the Maldivian government.
Once completed, the bridge network is expected to significantly strengthen connectivity across the Greater Malé Region and provide a direct transport link to the developing commercial and industrial areas of Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.
