STELCO celebrates engineers as backbone of its operations on National Engineers’ Day

By Hussain Shinan Published 3 hours ago

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has recognised its engineers for their contribution to the company’s operations and the country’s development as part of its National Engineers’ Day celebrations.

A special ceremony was held by the state-owned electricity utility to acknowledge engineers working across the company, with STELCO highlighting their role in maintaining essential electricity services around the clock.

Speaking at the ceremony, STELCO Managing Director Dr Ali Azwar thanked the company’s engineers for their continued contribution to the development of STELCO and described them as important partners in the Maldives’ broader development.

Azwar said the company’s progress has been supported by the technical expertise and sustained efforts of its engineering workforce, whose responsibilities extend across critical areas of electricity generation and distribution.

STELCO Chief Technical Officer Ahmed Iqbal also addressed the gathering, highlighting the connection between the work carried out by engineers and the company’s ability to provide uninterrupted services to the public.

Iqbal said the diligence and professional integrity demonstrated by engineers are among the key factors enabling STELCO to maintain electricity services 24 hours a day.

Speaking on behalf of the company’s engineers, Rifaath Yousuf thanked STELCO’s management for its continued efforts to support the professional development of engineers.

The ceremony follows STELCO’s broader activities marking National Engineers’ Day, during which the company has highlighted the importance of developing local technical expertise.

Azwar recently revealed that STELCO’s entire engineering workforce is Maldivian, describing the achievement as a major source of pride for the company.

He has also encouraged more young Maldivians to consider careers in engineering, noting that relatively few students currently choose the field despite growing opportunities in the sector.

STELCO has been investing in technical and professional training as part of efforts to develop its workforce. According to figures previously shared by Azwar, the company facilitated 535 training opportunities for employees in 2024, with the number increasing to 947 last year. Engineers have also been sent to European countries for specialised training.

Engineering plays a central role in STELCO’s operations, encompassing electricity generation, distribution, mechanical and electrical systems and the continued development of power infrastructure.

The importance of such technical expertise has grown alongside increasing electricity demand and the expansion of the Greater Malé region, where major residential and commercial development has placed additional requirements on power infrastructure.

STELCO’s Engineers’ Day ceremony was held to formally recognise the employees responsible for much of that technical work, with the company’s leadership crediting its engineers with helping sustain reliable electricity services while supporting the continued development of the country’s energy infrastructure.
