Road safety takes focus as WAMCO launches eight-day staff training programme

By Hussain Shinan Published 3 hours ago

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has launched an eight-day road safety and awareness programme for its employees, with a particular focus on strengthening safe driving practices among staff operating company vehicles.

The programme began on August 31 and is being conducted jointly by WAMCO Academy and the Awareness and Prevention department of Traffic Police and Road Management.

The initiative will provide employees with practical guidance on road safety and familiarise them with general land transport rules and responsibilities intended to reduce risks to motorists, passengers and other road users.

A key component of the programme is dedicated training for WAMCO drivers, who will receive guidance on precautions that should be followed while operating vehicles as part of their daily duties.

Drivers will also be briefed on checks and preparations that should be completed before beginning a journey, helping identify potential safety issues before vehicles enter public roads.

In addition to road safety instruction, the eight-day programme will include team-building activities aimed at strengthening coordination and cooperation among participating employees.

The programme forms part of wider efforts by Traffic Police to improve road safety through awareness, education and engagement with organisations whose employees regularly operate vehicles on public roads.

For WAMCO, safe driving practices are particularly relevant to its day-to-day operations. As the state-owned company responsible for waste collection and management services, its employees operate collection vehicles and other machinery across busy residential and commercial areas as part of routine service delivery.

Waste collection operations can also require vehicles to stop frequently along public roads while employees carry out collection work, placing importance on driver awareness, proper vehicle preparation and coordination between crew members.

The training comes as road safety and traffic management continue to receive greater attention in the Maldives, particularly in the densely populated Greater Malé region where large numbers of vehicles, pedestrians and commercial operations share limited road space.

The government has also recently introduced a new legal framework for land transportation after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu ratified the Land Transport Act. The legislation establishes updated rules covering vehicles, driving licences, public transport, parking, enforcement and road safety, alongside provisions for a driving licence demerit system.

Against this backdrop, WAMCO’s collaboration with Traffic Police is intended to ensure employees understand their responsibilities on the road and are equipped with practical knowledge that can be applied during daily operations.

The eight-day programme will combine regulatory awareness with operational safety guidance, with the broader objective of protecting WAMCO employees as well as members of the public who share the roads with the company’s vehicles.
