30 Maldivian healthcare professionals join China-backed medical training programme

By Hussain Shinan Published 3 hours ago

China has launched a three-week medical services training programme for 30 Maldivian healthcare professionals, continuing capacity-building cooperation between the two countries in the health sector.

The Training Course on Medical Services for Maldives began on September 2 and will run until September 22, according to information shared by the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives.

Participants have been selected from the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare as well as hospitals and other medical institutions across the Maldives.

The programme is aimed at strengthening the professional capabilities of Maldivian healthcare personnel while creating opportunities for participants to exchange experiences and knowledge with their counterparts.

The Chinese side said it hopes the programme will provide participants with a productive learning experience, encourage peer-to-peer exchanges and contribute to stronger professional cooperation.

The latest programme forms part of China’s wider capacity-building assistance to the Maldives, under which Maldivian professionals from different sectors have participated in specialised training and exchange programmes.

Healthcare has increasingly featured in cooperation between Malé and Beijing.

China and the Maldives signed an implementation agreement for the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital project in January this year, further expanding bilateral cooperation in healthcare infrastructure.

China has also supported medical capacity building and equipment assistance. Previous cooperation has included healthcare training exchanges and the donation of laboratory equipment to Maldivian health facilities.

Beyond healthcare, China has conducted training programmes for Maldivian professionals in a range of areas. Earlier this year, Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua attended the conclusion of a Chinese-language training programme conducted for Maldives Customs Service personnel, reflecting the broader emphasis placed on human-resource development within bilateral cooperation.

The Maldives and China established diplomatic relations in 1972, with cooperation between the two countries subsequently expanding across infrastructure, tourism, healthcare, trade and human-resource development.

The three-week medical services programme adds to those exchanges, bringing together professionals from different parts of the Maldivian healthcare sector for training through September 22.
