Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded two new infrastructure projects covering the development of a swimming area in R. Innamadhoo and coastal protection works in HA. Maarandhoo.
Agreements for the projects were signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, adding to a series of island development contracts recently awarded to the state-owned company.
State Minister Ismail Hameed signed the agreements on behalf of the Ministry, while MTCC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed signed on behalf of the company.
Swimming area to be developed in Innamadhoo
The Innamadhoo project will establish and protect a designated swimming area for the island community.
Under the scope of works, MTCC will construct a 100-metre rock boulder groyne and a 200-metre rock boulder breakwater.
The company will also carry out beach nourishment using approximately 4,100 cubic metres of material, helping create and maintain the beach area within the protected section.
MTCC has been given 180 days to complete the Innamadhoo project.
The development is expected to provide residents with an improved recreational area while the coastal structures help protect the beach from wave activity and erosion.
Major coastal protection works planned for Maarandhoo
In HA. Maarandhoo, MTCC will undertake a substantially larger coastal protection project aimed at strengthening areas of the island vulnerable to erosion and wave action.
The project includes backfilling 2.28 hectares of land and constructing a 939-metre rock boulder revetment along the shoreline.
MTCC will also build a 312-metre low-crest rock boulder breakwater and a 180-metre groyne as part of the coastal defence system.
Coastal erosion remains a persistent challenge across the Maldives, where low-lying islands are naturally exposed to changing currents, seasonal wave conditions and other coastal processes. Revetments, breakwaters and groynes are commonly used in government-funded projects to protect shorelines and infrastructure, although the specific engineering solution varies depending on conditions at each island.
The two new contracts further expand MTCC’s portfolio of infrastructure projects across the atolls.
The latest agreements follow the recent awarding of development projects across nine other islands to MTCC, with much of that work focused on harbour development and coastal protection.
Among its recently awarded projects are major reclamation and coastal protection works in K. Maafushi and Sh. Funadhoo, harbour works in K. Gaafaru and GDh. Madaveli, and coastal protection works in F. Dharanboodhoo.
MTCC has also received contracts for projects in HA. Kelaa, HA. Muraidhoo, B. Kihadhoo and Dh. Bandidhoo, covering harbour improvements, reclamation and shoreline protection.
As one of the Maldives’ largest state-owned infrastructure contractors, MTCC carries out harbour construction, reclamation, coastal protection, road development and other civil engineering projects throughout the country.
With the latest agreements, the company’s ongoing infrastructure programme will extend to Innamadhoo and Maarandhoo, addressing two different community needs: the creation of an improved recreational swimming area in Innamadhoo and strengthened coastal protection in Maarandhoo.
