MTCC reaches Association Cup final on tournament debut after five-set thriller

By Hussain Shinan Published 2 hours ago

Club MTCC has booked a place in the Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM) Cup 2026 final in its debut appearance, overcoming Huraa Community Club in a dramatic five-set semifinal at the Social Centre Indoor Court.

MTCC came through Sunday’s afternoon encounter with a 3-2 victory, recovering twice after falling behind in sets before taking control of the closing stages of the match.

The result represents a strong first campaign in the Association Cup for MTCC, which entered the tournament for the first time this year.

Huraa made the stronger finish to a tightly contested opening set, capitalising on errors from MTCC in the closing points to secure a 25-23 win.

MTCC responded emphatically in the second. Although Huraa initially moved ahead, MTCC found its rhythm midway through the set, with foreign players Silvia Regina and Diane playing important roles in shifting momentum. MTCC eventually took the set 25-15 to level the semifinal at 1-1.

Huraa regained the advantage in the third set as MTCC’s level dropped, allowing the Pool A winners to take a 25-20 victory and move within one set of the final.

Facing elimination, MTCC produced one of its strongest spells of the match.

The tournament newcomers dominated the fourth set 25-15, forcing the semifinal into a deciding fifth set with the teams level at two sets each.

The final set remained competitive, but MTCC held its nerve in the decisive moments to win 15-12, completing the comeback and securing a place in the championship match.

Debut campaign ends with a shot at the title

MTCC entered the knockout stage after finishing second in Pool B, behind defending champions Club WAMCO.

The two teams had already met during the group stage, with WAMCO opening its title defence with a straight-sets victory over MTCC.

Huraa Community Club, meanwhile, progressed to the semifinals after finishing at the top of Pool A, ahead of second-placed Police Club.

Sunday’s result therefore saw MTCC eliminate a pool winner on its way to the final, extending what has already become a memorable debut campaign for the club.

The Association Cup is among the country’s prominent domestic volleyball competitions organised by the Volleyball Association of Maldives, bringing together established clubs and institutional teams.

MTCC’s run also comes as the company continues its involvement in sporting activities alongside its core operations in transport and infrastructure development.

Having entered the tournament as newcomers, MTCC will now have the opportunity to finish its first Association Cup campaign with the championship title.
