Fenaka Corporation has completed a major overhaul of a 400 kW generator at the HDh. Kumundhoo powerhouse, returning the unit to service as part of efforts to strengthen the island’s electricity supply.
The state-owned utility said the generator has resumed power production following completion of the maintenance work, increasing the availability of generation capacity needed to provide reliable electricity to households and businesses in Kumundhoo.
Overhauling a generator involves extensive maintenance beyond routine servicing, including inspection and refurbishment of key components to restore performance and extend the operational life of the unit.
For island power systems, keeping existing generators in good operating condition is particularly important because individual communities generally rely on their own local generation infrastructure rather than an interconnected national electricity grid.
Fenaka said the work in Kumundhoo forms part of its efforts to improve electricity services and maintain a sustainable supply for the island’s residents.
The company has been carrying out a combination of generator upgrades, network improvements and capacity expansion projects across the atolls as electricity demand increases in island communities.
Recent initiatives have included the delivery of additional generation capacity to several islands. Fenaka delivered a new 1,200 kW generator to HDh. Hanimaadhoo as part of efforts to strengthen power generation there, while a 1,000 kW unit was delivered to HA. Hoarafushi. The company has also been working on the installation of a 1,200 kW generator in Sh. Milandhoo.
Alongside increasing generation capacity, Fenaka has been extending electricity networks into newly developed residential areas. Recent work has included network expansion in islands such as HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, L. Fonadhoo, Th. Buruni and Th. Thimarafushi.
The Kumundhoo project differs from those capacity additions by focusing on restoring an existing generation unit to full operation, allowing the company to make continued use of established infrastructure while improving the resilience of the island’s power system.
Fenaka provides electricity, water and sewerage services across a large number of inhabited islands outside the Greater Malé region, making maintenance and replacement of ageing utility infrastructure an ongoing part of its operations.
With the overhaul now complete, the 400 kW Kumundhoo generator has been returned to active service, providing additional operational capacity for the island’s electricity network.
