President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has presented the Maldives’ Engineers’ Award 2026, recognising engineers whose contributions have helped advance national development and the country’s engineering sector.
The President presided over the awards ceremony held at Barceló Nasandhura, marking a major step in giving national recognition to engineering professionals and their contribution to infrastructure and economic development.
Among the evening’s highest honours, Dr Furqan Ibrahim received the Engineer of the Year Award.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to three prominent figures for their contributions to engineering: Abdul Shakoor Solih, the late Ahmed Mahureen and the late Mohamed Rasheed. The latter two were honoured posthumously.
Awards were also presented across several areas of the profession, including sustainability, engineering innovation, technology, education and research, young engineers, student innovation, community impact and women in engineering.
The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development had opened nominations across 10 categories for the awards.
President Muizzu first announced plans to establish a national engineering award on August 30, 2025, during the Maldives’ inaugural National Engineers’ Day.
August 30 was designated National Engineers’ Day to coincide with the anniversary of the opening of the Sinamalé Bridge, one of the Maldives’ most significant infrastructure projects.
The awards highlight the growing importance placed on Maldivian engineers as the country continues major infrastructure and construction projects across the islands.
