Heavy rain, thunderstorms and rough seas to continue until Wednesday

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and rough seas are expected to continue across the Maldives, with the current spell of unsettled weather forecast to persist until Wednesday, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office).

A White Alert is in effect from Baa Atoll to Laamu Atoll until 2:00 pm today. Winds are expected at 19 to 24 mph, with gusts reaching 40 mph during showers.

Sea conditions are also expected to remain rough, with waves between four and seven feet.

Earlier today, a nationwide White Alert remained in force until 9:30 am for heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusts of up to 40 mph.

The prolonged spell of adverse weather began last Thursday and is being driven by the prevailing Southwest Monsoon.

Heavy rainfall has already caused flooding on several islands. In Feydhoo, Addu City, more than 70 households reported water entering their homes, causing varying levels of property damage.

With unstable conditions expected to continue through Wednesday, the MET Office has urged the public to remain cautious. Authorities have also advised residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions to minimise potential damage.
