MMA opens the door for experts to review research shaping economic debate

By Hussain Shinan Published 1 hour ago

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has opened applications for academics, researchers and subject-matter experts to review research papers submitted for its upcoming Research Conference.

The central bank is establishing a Peer Review Pool whose members will independently evaluate papers ahead of the 3rd MMA Research Conference 2026, scheduled to take place from December 5 to 7.

Those selected will be tasked with examining the technical quality of submitted research, including the accuracy and use of data, the relevance of the research topic and the overall academic quality of the work.

MMA is seeking reviewers with expertise across a broad range of economic and financial fields, reflecting the variety of research expected to be presented at the conference.

Areas of expertise include macroeconomic policy, monetary economics, Islamic finance, public finance, tourism, international trade and digital finance. Specialists in other fields relevant to the conference are also eligible to apply.

Research papers will undergo a double-blind peer review process, a system commonly used in academic research to promote independent and impartial assessment.

Under the process, reviewers will not be told the identity of the researchers whose work they are assessing, while researchers will also not know the identities of the reviewers evaluating their papers. The approach is intended to ensure that papers are judged primarily on the strength and quality of the research itself.

Members of the Peer Review Pool who complete their assigned reviews in accordance with MMA’s guidelines will receive compensation and certificates recognising their participation. The central bank said reviewers may also have access to further opportunities associated with the initiative.

Applications are open until September 27. Interested academics, researchers and experts can apply through the MMA Research Conference website at:

The Research Conference has become part of MMA’s efforts to encourage evidence-based research and discussion on economic and financial issues affecting the Maldives.

As the country’s central bank, MMA plays a central role in monetary policy, financial sector regulation, foreign reserve management and maintaining financial stability, making research on domestic and international economic developments relevant to both policymaking and the wider financial sector.

The conference provides a platform for researchers and professionals to examine such issues and present findings that can contribute to discussions surrounding economic and financial policy.

This year’s event will mark the third edition of the MMA Research Conference and will be held over three days from December 5 to 7.
